In a recent Golf Digest article, the well-known golf instructor Butch Harmon shared tips that better enable players to avoid sending the ball past the hole when hitting downhill puts. According to Harmon, there are a number of adjustments to make for a short, fast putt, the first being to use an extremely light grip, which helps deaden the contact. Second, he advises to use slow-motion stroke by focusing on a slow backward motion followed by a slow follow-through motion, all while maintaining the light grip.
Even for short putts, Harmon states that it’s important to line up properly and execute a firm stroke with little body movement. Before starting the put, he instructs to pick a target and aim the face of the club first. Then, during the putt, he advises to keep one’s head down and watch the club hit the ball.
